Juba and Yau Yau Rebels reach Ceasefire

- An announcement on the ceasefire was made by the Spokesman of the SPLA, Phillip Aguer: “A ceasefire in Jonglei state between the forces of David Yau Yau and SPLA takes effect from 2300 hours on January 6, 2014.”

- David Yau Yau and his group have been rebels to the government since 2010 after they lost the Jonglei provincial elections. They signed a ceasefire this week in attempts to begin peace talks with the government.

Heavy Fighting in Unity and Jonglei States causes civilians to flee into Abyei and Lakes States

- The UN reports that over 200,000 have been displaced in the conflict.
- The top humanitarian concerns, according to the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) are food, healthcare, shelter, water, sanitation and hygiene.

- Fighting between the government forces and opposition in Unity State broke out on January 8th, and caused between 2,000- 25,00 people to enter into Abyei to flee from the violence. Those who entered were mostly women and children to stay with family and friends in the region.

- Reports on those fleeing Bor (Capital of Jonglei) to enter into Awerial in Lakes State. In the span of two weeks, approximately 75,000 people have arrived in Awerial. Most people who have taken up temporary residence in Awerial are living outdoors.

- Since the conflict began about a month ago, over 400,000 South Sudanese civilians have had to flee their homes, with a recent surge seeing about 78,000 fleeing.

South Sudan troops advancing to Bor

- The SPLA has confirmed that it is fighting to recapture Bor. The previous Friday, the army recaptured Bentiu, which is the capital of Unity State.
