Announcements

On November 1, Kyle Matthews was appointed Executive Director of MIGS.

On October 25 Countering the Trajectories (CONTRA), a new MIGS project with the goal of combating extremism and self-radicalization, launched its website. The project is part of the Peer to Peer: Challenging Extremism (P2P) initiative sponsored by the U.S Department of State, Facebook, and EdVenture Partners.

MIGS is pleased to welcome a new research associate to its team, Greer Nicholson. Nicholson is a BCL/LLB student at McGill and former Canadian Forces member and Brookings Institution Foreign Policy Studies intern. MIGS also welcomes Master student Louise Gregory, who is undertaking her practicum with MIGS, from the National Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies at Otago University, New Zealand.

Upcoming Events

On November 30 MIGS will host the book launch of “The Global Impact of Religious Violence” (Wipf and Stock, 2016). The books three editors, André Gagné, Spyridon Loumakis and Calogero A. Miceli, will be present at the event.

On November 16-17, MIGS will organize the Global Countering Violent Extremism Forum in Montreal.

On November 18, MIGS will host Canadian and American experts on Countering terrorism and radicalization for a set of closed-door discussions on countering violent extremism online.

November 3-6
MIGS was the institutional partner and co-organizer the 5^th Global Diplomacy Lab, which looked deeply into the subject of "Balancing Power through Information Technology". The Global Diplomacy Lab is sponsored by the German Federal Foreign Office.

November 2-4
MIGS, alongside the Faculty or Arts and Sciences and the Department of Political Science of Concordia University, hosted a series of round table workshops and a public event titled “Global Diplomacy in the Digital Age: Decoding how Technology is Transforming International Relations”. Kyle Matthews, Marie Lamensch, Nicolai Pogadl and Marc-Andre Argentino attended UNESCO’s Conference "Internet and the radicalization of youth: Preventing, Acting and Living together".

Marc-Andre and Marie hosted a workshop titled "Quel package digital et utilisable dans les écoles créer afin de contrer les fausses-idées sur l'islam ?" MIGS’ Distinguished Senior Fellow Roméo Dallaire was also present at the conference

MIGS and the Chaire Raoul Dandurand co-organized a talk on the peace process in Columbia. « Le processus de paix en Colombie : opportunités et obstacles » featured journalist Martín Movilla, MIGS’ Fellow Diego Osorio, Professor Leila Ceilis (UQAM) and Adjunct Professor Philippe Dufort (Saint-Paul University)

MIGS was also honored by a visit from Kay Webb Mayfield, Minister-Counselor for Public Affairs of the United States Embassy in Ottawa.

As part of UNESCO’s conference on "Internet and the radicalization of youth: Preventing, Acting and Living together", Marie Lamensch gave an interview to Radio-Canada’s Midi-Info on women and radicalization.
