Announcements

On 15 April, MIGS will co-host the 2^nd annual Artificial Intelligence and Human Rights Forum in partnership with Element AI and the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The Forum will take place under the patronage of the Canadian Commission for UNESCO. To register for the event, please click here.

For the third year in a row, MIGS is a partner of Human Right Watch’s Toronto Film Festival taking place from January 30 to February 4. MIGS is the community partner for the screening of On the President’s Orders, a documentary about President Duterte’s war on drugs in The Philippines. MIGS Fellow Fannie Lafontaine will also give a talk at the screening of “Prosecuting Evil: The Extroardinary World of Ben Ferencz” on 16 January.

MIGS Digital Fellow Joana Cook will be in the U.S. from January 26 to February 10 to discuss her book “A Woman’s Place: U.S. Counterterrorism Since 9/11.” She will give talks at the Center for Human Rights and Global Justice at New York University, the Jackson Institute for Global Affairs and International Security Studies at Yale University, the Belfer Centre at Harvard, and George Washington University, amongst others.

MIGS is pleased to announce its new youth fellows: Karen Rubbo, Lauren Salim, Clémentine Blateau and Jasmine Dhalla.

Upcoming Events

On 24 January, MIGS will co-sponsor an event titled, “Remembering the Holocaust, Conveying its Lessons” at the Canadian Parliament with the Association of Canadian Studies and the Canadian Senate to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration and extermination camp
At the end of January, MIGS will participate in a twitter chat with the Helen Clark Foundation to discuss the Christchurch Principles.

Past Events

On 9 December, MIGS hosted an event titled “25 years later- the rebirth of Kigali,” where two leading African experts, Njeri Cerere and Vincent Rwigamba, talked about the evolution of the City of Kigali since the 1994 Rwanda genocide.

On 9 December, MIGS hosted “Rwanda's lessons for humanity,” in partnership with Véhicule Press, to commemorate the International Day of Commemoration and Dignity of the Victims of Genocide. The event featured Christine Magill, genocide survivors Bertin Muhizi and Marie Josée Gicali, United Nations peacekeeping veteran Sammy Sampson and Frank Chalk, Professor of History at Concordia University.

On 10 December, MIGS hosted an event titled “Operation IMPACT to defeat Daesh: a discussion Colonel Landry,” presented by Colonel Eric Landry.

On 11 December, MIGS co-hosted the Canada Launch of the Global Terrorism Index, in partnership with the Institute for Economics and Peace and the Professional Development Institute at University of Ottawa. A video of the launch is available on CPAC. CPAC also interviewed MIGS Fellow Phil Gurski.

On 15 January, MIGS hosted an event titled “Human rights, China and the future of democracies.” Panelists Margaret McCuaig-Johnston, Sherap Therchin, Benjamin Fung and Dilmurat Mahmut discussed China and human rights, including Tibet, the Uighurs, Hong Kong, and 5G.

On 16 January, MIGS hosted Digital Fellow Phil Gurski for the launch of this new book “When Religion Kills: how extremist justify violence through faith”, which explores violent extremism and its interaction with a broad range of the world’s major religions.
