Announcements

This week, MIGS is leading a delegation of human rights organizations, including the Global Center for The Responsibility to Protect and The Sentinel Project, to travel to Ottawa to meet with Members of Parliament, Senators and Canadian Government officials with the aim of identifying new strategic approaches and initiatives to prevent mass atrocity crimes.

MIGS has been selected by AccessNow to host the panel discussion “Social media hate machine: can digital peace be achieved” at the 12th edition of RightsCon, which will take place in Costa Rica on June 5-8, 2023.

Advocacy

Along with 45 civil-society organizations, MIGS signed a joint letter calling on the governments convening the Summit for Democracy 2023 to prioritize human rights due diligence for spyware technologies on the Summit’s agenda.

April 23

MIGS’ Executive Director Kyle Matthews will deliver a keynote address at a commemoration for the 108th Anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. The event will be hosted by the Armenian Community Centre of Toronto.

As a part of the Digital Peace Project, MIGS spoke to Dr. Stefanie Duguay, Concordia University Research Chair in Digital intimacy, gender, and sexuality, about identity expression for queer people in digital spaces and the challenges that they face when navigating online harms. March 22

Kyle Matthews and Digital Fellow Phil Gurski participated in the Canadian launch of the 2023 Global Terrorism Index, which was hosted by the University of Ottawa’s Professional Development Institute National Security programme. Kyle, Phil, and Serge Stroobants (Global Director for Security, Defence and Intelligence at the Institute for Economics and Peace) also gave a press conference on Parliament Hill.

MIGS’ John Lemieux Faculty Fellow Liam Mahoney was in the Netherlands to participate in an Open Source Intelligence Tools (OSINT) workshop organized by the organization Bellingcat.

March 23

MIGS Fellow Naomi Kikoler spoke at a hearing of the Select Committee on the CCP titled “The Chinese Communist Party’s ongoing Uyghur genocide”. Other speakers included Nury Turkel (Chair, U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom) and Dr. Adrian Zenz (Senior Fellow and Director in China Studies, Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation).

MIGS Fellow Eric Meerkamper attended the DemocracyXChange Summit in Toronto, an event that brings together changemakers to discuss the most pressing problems of our generation.

March 29

MIGS hosted a Twitter Spaces chat on the Humanitarian Crisis in Nagorno Karabakh. The discussion featured Elisa von Joeden-Forgey (Co-founder and co-president of the Lemkin Institute), Gregory Stanton (Founder and President of Genocide Watch) and Robert Avestisyan (Representative of the Nagorno Karabakh Republic in the USA and Canada). Kyle Matthews, Marie Lamensch and MIGS John Lemieux Student Fellow Elora Bussière-Ladouceur attended a virtual event titled “Democracy in the Digital Age: How Canada Advances Internet Freedom for All”. The event was organized by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC).

April 4

Marie Lamensch spoke with Anna-Alexia Kotsakis at the Georgetown Center on National Security about cyber violence against women. The discussion is part of the Center’s new research project on global gendered disinformation.

MIGS Digital Fellow Joanna Cook participated in a webinar titled “Assessing the State of Terrorism Studies” organized by International Centre for Counter-Terrorism (ICCT).

April 5

As part of MIGS’ Digital Peace Project, Marie Lamensch spoke with Marianne Couture-Cossette (Les 3Sex*) about gender-based cyber violence and the manosphere. You can listen to the podcast episode in French on Apple Podcast or Spotify.

MIGS hosted an informal discussion with author and journalist Joanna Chiu on the occasion of the publication of the French translation of her book ”China Unbound: A New World Disorder”. Her visit to MIGS was covered in the La Presse article “Les désirs de Pékin sont désordre”.




MIGS’ Executive Director Kyle Matthews participated in the Quebec Dialogue Session on Canada’s Immigration Future organized by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.

April 12

MIGS hosted the third round table of its Digital Peace Project, in partnership with Concordia University's Indigenous Directions Office. Titled “Countering Online Hate Towards Indigenous Peoples”, the discussion featured Catherine Martin (Director of Indigenous Community Engagement, Dalhousie University), Dr. Suzanne Kite (visual artist and research assistant at the Initiative for Indigenous Futures), Bailey Oster (Youth Programs and Services Director, Métis Nation of Alberta), Megan Tipler (Indigenous Strategies Manager, Office of the Vice Provost Indigenous Programming and Research, University of Alberta) and was moderated by Kristy Snell (Academic Director/Journalistic Leader In-Residence, Institute for Inclusive, Investigative, and Innovative Journalism, Concordia University).
