Announcements

MIGS’ Executive Director Kyle Matthews will travel to the United Kingdom and Belgium on 22-29 November to meet with parliamentarians and civil society leaders. Kyle will attend a conference on justice and accountability for the war in Ukraine hosted by the Ukrainian Bar Association, the International Bar Association and the International Bar Association’s Human Rights Institute at the Belgian Parliament on November 27 and at the European Parliament on November 28. On November 25, Kyle will attend a conference titled “New Frontiers: Open Source Evidence” hosted in London by The Honourable Society of the Inner Temple.


On 11-12 October, MIGS hosted the inaugural Montreal International Security Summit, which focused on Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine and the war’s impact on global security and human rights. Recordings of the panel discussions are now available on CPAC in both English and French:: 


MIGS welcomes Daphne Beaudoin as a new student fellow. As a master's degree candidate in International Law (LL.M.), Daphné Beaudoin's research focuses on issues related to international treaty law protection to refugees during armed conflicts. Find out more about Daphne here.

Advocacy

2 November 

Kyle Matthews, along with 106 Experts, signed an open letter to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights calling on representatives of democratic countries and human rights advocates to protest the Iranian regime’s chairmanship of the Social Forum of the United Nations Human Rights Council.


21 November

Kyle Matthews co-signed a letter calling for the creation of a UN Special Rapporteur for Democracy.

Tim William Zøllner attended the roundtable discussion “Historical Memory and Hate in Today’s Canada and Germany” hosted by Friedrich Ebert Stiftung in Ottawa.

2 November

MIGS, in collaboration with the Conseil International du Canada (Montreal branch), hosted an event titled “Feeling the Chill: Arctic Governance Amid Russia's War on Ukraine”. The event featured Joanna Hosa (European Council on Foreign Relations), Julie Crôteau (Arctic and Polar Policy at Global Affairs Canada) and Cedric Gallant (Nunatsiaq News).

9 November 

Marie Lamensch gave a virtual presentation on online disinformation targeting women and girls at the “Atelier de valorisation des jumelages francophones de lutte contre la désinformation” organized by the Organisation pour la Francophonie.
 

MIGS hosted the second meeting of its Global Taskforce on Digital Authoritarianism.

13-14 November

MIGS Fellow Andrei Serbin Pont represented CRIES (Coordinadora Regional de Investigaciones Económicas y Sociales) and the Global Partnership for the Prevention of Armed Conflict (GPPAC) at Club de Madrid´s Annual Policy Dialogue

15 November

MIGS, in collaboration with the Chaire Raoul Dandurand at Université du Québec à Montréal, co-hosted an event titled “Borders Politics in Uncertain Times : the Case of Finland”. The event featured Jussi P. Laine (Karelian Institute of the University of Eastern Finland) and was moderated by Prof. Elisabeth Vallet (UQAM). The discussion is also available as a podcast episode.
 

16 November

Kyle Matthews spoke at Parliamentarians for Global Action’s  44th Annual Forum for the panel “Preserving Women Parliamentarians’ Leadership in the Face of Cyber Harassment and Attacks”.

MIGS hosted the event “Peace in the South Caucasus: Feminist Perspectives on R2P & WPS in Karabakh” in collaboration with the Human Rights Research and Education Centre (University of Ottawa). Speakers included Bénédicte Santoire (University of Ottawa), Anoush F. Terjanian (Human Rights Research and Education Centre), and Sheila Paylan (former legal advisor to the United Nations).


29-30 November

MIGS staff will attend a two-day closed-door conference titled “Attention: Understanding and Shaping the Digital Media Ecosystem“ organized by the Canadian Digital Media Research Network at McGill University. The conference includes a public evening event on 29 November titled “Platforms, Power, and Democracy”.
