On 23 October Kyle Matthews participated and spoke at the launch of the “Chaire de leadership en enseignement Roméo Dallaire sur les conflits civils et la paix durable” at Université Laval in Quebec City.

MIGS successfully hosted the second edition of the Montreal International Security Summit, focusing on China and the Indo-Pacific. Speakers included Tomohiko Taniguchi (Fujitsu Future Studies Centre), Melissa Chan (The Global Reporting Centre), Guy St-Jacques (former Canadian Ambassador to Canada), Sophie Richardson (The Hopkins-Nanjing Center), Robert Fife (The Globe and Mail), Anne Tsai Bennet (National Endowment for Democracy), Sarah Cook (Independent Researcher), Margaret McCuaig (University of Ottawa), Nadège Rolland (National Bureau of Asian Research), Vina Nadjibulla (Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada), Benjamin Tallis (German Council on Foreign Relations), Mercedes Stephenson (Global News), Guy St-Jacques (former Canadian Ambassador to Canada), and Evan Solomon (GZero Media), amongst others.
Partners included, the Canadian Defense Department, the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung, The Taiwan Foundation for Democracy, The Macdonald Laurier Institute, the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada, CORIM, Optimum Publishing, CPAC and the Canadian International Council. Next year’s summit theme will focus on AI and emerging technologies related to the protection of civilians and human rights.

Advocacy
October 3
MIGS and an expanding alliance of human rights groups co-signed an open letter calling on the NBA to cancel the October 4 and 6 pre-season games between the Boston Celtics and Denver Nuggets in Abu Dhabi in light of the United Arab Emirates’ fueling of atrocities in Sudan. The campaign is organized by Refugees International.
October 8
Together with 627 other civil society organizations from 110 countries, MIGS co-signed an open letter to the Permanent Representatives to the United Nations ahead of the annual Open Debate on Women, Peace and Security.

MIGS Fellow Andrei Serbin Pont spoke at PeaceCon2024 on the topic of “Fear Factor: How Fear is Being Used to Control Our Minds, Our Bodies, and Our Institutions and What to Do About It”.

MIGS Fellow Phil Gurski spoke at the “Three Years Since the Taliban Takeover: Security Threats, Humanitarian Crisis, and the Fight for Freedom” event at the Bil Graham Centre on a Session on “Addressing the Crisis in Afghanistan: Historical Perspectives, Emerging Threats, and the Resistance”.

Kyle Matthews gave a presentation at the Valcartier military base on the growing use of armed drones in contemporary conflicts and the protection of civilians.
October 1-2
Kyle Matthews attended the 11th edition of the Warsaw Security Forum. This prominent event is organized in collaboration with the National Security Bureau under the President of Poland, alongside NATO, with strong support from Poland’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Defense.

Kyle Matthews attended a diplomatic event to mark Taiwan’s National Day of Independence.

Marie Lamensch spoke at the roundtable on “How Foreign Repressive Governments Target Women Journalists in the West” organized by the Coalition For Women In Journalism at the University of Ottawa Professional Development Institute.
