The Department of Philosophy is pleased to announce that Matilda Cerone, graduating BA student with Honours in Philosophy, is the 2019-20 recipient of the W.R. Fraser Philosophy Medal. The Medal is awarded to the most outstanding graduating student in the department.

Matilda Cerone’s outstanding academic record is supported by extra-curricular contributions to Concordia University student life as a member of the Students of Philosophy Association (SoPhiA) executive committee, the Inclusivity Project, environmental activism with La Planète s'invite à l'université (LPSU), and as a Writing Assistant with the Student Success Centre. She won a Concordia Undergraduate Student Research Award (CUSRA) and Vladimir Zeman Award in 2018, has presented papers at undergraduate research conferences Philopolis and internationally, and is the inaugural 2019-20 winner of the Thought Provoking Award for best philosophical essay on a contemporary social trend. The title of this latter winning essay was: "Capitalism's Foundations: Sexism, Racism and Feminism in Italy." In addition to Honours in Philosophy, Matilda also completed a Minor in French.

Undergraduate Program Director Dr. Emilia Angelova writes: "Here is a student who has outstanding self-determination and commitment to excellence in study, and who has benefitted from the breadth and strengths of our Honours in Philosophy program in the highest degree possible. Matilda is one of the best undergraduate students that I have met."

Department Chair Dr. Matt Barker writes: "Matilda's accomplishments in, and contributions to, the Department of Philosophy and its larger community cannot be overstated. It is exceedingly rare for a student to excel in so many diverse aspects of their undergraduate career--from stellar academic achievements, including lofty grades and research presentations and essay awards, to a long list of leadership and activity in the life of our community. We are fortunate that Matilda chose Philosophy and wish Matilda all the very best in future endeavors."

Congratulations, Matilda, on this great achievement. We wish you continued success in Concordia’s Graduate Program in Visual Journalism!
