The Department of Philosophy is pleased to announce that Tania Raquel Brand, BA Major in Philosophy student, is among the recipients of a Concordia University Student Research Award (CUSRA).

Her summer research project, "Species, Human Nature, and Disability" will be supervised by Dr. Matt Barker.

Dr. Barker describes the research project:

"This project is to do research for, and begin the writing of, an essay that connects work on species with work on human nature. The essay is commissioned for a newly contracted volume, The Routledge Companion to the Philosophy of Human Nature. Tania will assist in producing literature reviews which will focus on (1) recent work on human nature, (2) recent work in biology on the nature of the species category, (3) recent revivals of essentialist views in metaphysics, and (4) recent work on disability, which many accounts of human nature struggle to adequately address. Finally, Tania will explore whether divergent models of disability can be integrated in ways that inform leading accounts of human nature."

The CUSRA program provides funding to undergraduate students in the fine arts, social sciences, humanities, engineering and computer science, business disciplines, and natural and health sciences. The goal of the awards is to stimulate interest in research, participatory research, or research-creation work that will complement coursework and enhance preparation for graduate studies or research-related careers.
