Briana McGinnis is the 2017-2019 postdoctoral fellow at the Center for the Study of Liberal Democracy. She is a political theorist, specializing in the moral psychology of citizenship, the ethics of migration, punishment, and the history of political thought. She has complementary research and teaching interests in American political development and public law. She is currently completing a manuscript, Exile in America: Political Expulsion and the Limits of Liberal Government. Drawing on both the history of political thought and contemporary political theory, Exile in America explores the continued use of expulsion in liberal democratic polities across the U.S., analyzing what the persistence of such seemingly archaic practices can tell us about those political communities that employ it.
