Dr. Newell studies political philosophy with a focus on classical, modern and historicist concepts of political community, justice and legitimacy. He was educated at the University of Toronto, where he received a BA in Arts and Sciences and an MA in Political Economy, and at Yale University, where he received a PhD in Political Science. He has been a John Adams Fellow at the University of London (1997), a Fellow of the Eccles Centre at the British Library (1997), a Fellow of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, D.C. (1990-91), the National Humanities Center in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina (1985-86), and a Junior Fellow of Massey College, the University of Toronto (1974-75). He has also held a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship for University Teachers and a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada Postdoctoral Fellowship. He is the author of Tyrants: A History of Power, Injustice and Terror (Cambridge University Press, 2016).
