Nancy Tapias Torrado at the United College

We are glad to annouce that Dr. Nancy R. Tapias Torrado, the 2023-24 Barry Pashak Postdoctoral Fellow at the Social Justice Centre, accepted a new position at the United College (University of Waterloo) as Assistant Professor in Human Rights.

Dr. Tapias Torrado holds a PhD in sociology (University of Oxford) and is a human rights lawyer (Pontificia Universidad Javeriana-PUJ).

For over two decades, Nancy Tapias Torrado has been dedicated to working with and for human rights defenders at risk and some of the most vulnerable persons and communities, mainly in Latin America.

She is a former Law Professor at PUJ and a former Amnesty International’s Americas Regional Researcher (International Secretariat, London, UK). She has consulted for the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and several non-governmental organizations, including OXFAM, CEJIL and PBI.

During her postdoc, Nancy gave many talks and published the paper “Wet’suwet’en women leading the defence of rivers and water from abuses committed in connection with megaprojects. The persistent legacies of the past in Canada” in the Routledge Handbook of Gender and Water Governance (2024).
