Reading Seminar on Boethius's Consolation of Philosophy
Dr. Dario Brancato, Dr. Jean-Michel Roessli, and Joseph Vietri are organizing an informal seminar / workshop series on Boethius' Consolation of Philosophy at the Department of Theological Studies (2140, Bishop St., Room D-01).
This fall, we will be doing a close reading of the 5 books of Boethius's masterpiece, and in winter 2018 we will be dealing with various aspects of the reception of the work through the centuries (commentaries, translations, and imitations).
Seminar / Workshop dates (all seminars / workshops will be between 11:00 am and 1:00 pm):
Friday, Oct 6th, 2017: Short introduction by Dr. Jean-Michel Roessli (Theological Studies) followed by the reading of Book 1 of the Consolation under the guidance of Dr. Dario Brancato (Classics, Modern Languages, and Linguistics).
Friday, Oct 20st, 2017: Reading of Book 2 under the guidance of Dr. Tobias Gittes (Liberal Arts College) and Book 3 under the guidance of Dr. Jean-Michel Roessli (Theological Studies).
Friday, Nov 10th, 2017: Reading of Book 4 under the guidance of Dr. Paul Allen (Theological Studies).
Friday, Dec 1st, 2017: Reading of Book 5 under the guidance of Dr. Dario Brancato (Classics, Modern Languages, and Linguistics), Dr. Jean-Michel Roessli and Joseph Vietri (Theological Studies).
Readers may choose any translation they prefer, but we enjoy reading Boethius's Consolation by P.G. Walsh's (Oxford World's Classic, 1999), Victor Watts' (Revised Edition. Penguins Classics, 2000), and H. R. James's translations.
Please note that the two-hour seminars / workshops will be held in both English and French.
