Space Concordia sees great results at national competition
Since December 2010, Scott Gleason, professor in Concordia's Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering has worked with a group of students on designing satellites. Now known as "Space Concordia," this group includes undergraduate and graduate students from several other engineering departments.
They have been working for some time in designing a satellite for the Canadian Satellite Design Challenge. A total of 9 universities are competing in this challenge including our own Concordia team.
All teams underwent a Preliminary Design Review (PDR) in late 2011. More recently, they underwent a Critical Design review (CDR).
Now, all that hard work is paying off: Space Concordia obtained the highest score in the CDR, by a significant margin. These two phases make up 50% of the overall score. Putting these two together, Space Concordia is now in 2nd place, but very very close to the team to beat, Manitoba.
At this point they have entered the "Assembly, Integration and Test" phase of the project, which will take several months. When all of that is over there will be one final review, and then the overall result will be determined.
William E. Lynch, Chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, would like to congratulate all of the students in Space Concordia on this excellent result, as well as Dr. Scott Gleason who has been the lead faculty member on this, as well as Dr. Eddie Ng (assistance with mechanical aspects) and Mr. Ted Obuchowicz (flight computer FPGA), Dr. Sheldon Williamson (power system) and Dr. Bob Paknys (ground station and antenna).
