Faculty Accolades

This is the first of what will be a recurring monthly news feature on our website, in which major accomplishments are recognized and celebrated. Ferhat Khendek, Ching Y. Suen, Catherine Mulligan, Samar Abdi, undergraduate student, Grzegorz Gut, Andreas Athienitis, Scott Gleason and Space Concordia are among this month's Faculty Accolades.

Researcher Ferhat Khendek's attempts to tackle service interruptions in such areas as mobile computing, telephony and banking has received the attention of the prestigious Canadian Council of Chief Executives. The Council featured his work in its 2012 Annual Report: Innovation, Productivity, Prosperity. Khendek is from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

Ferhat's project, MAGIC (Modeling and Automatic Generation of Information and upgrade Campaigns for Service Availability) is described succinctly on page 13 of the report.

Ching Y. Suen has won the Gold Medal, one of the highest awards awarded by the University of Bari in Italy. The medal was presented to Suen during the 13th International Conference on Frontiers in Handwriting Recognition, held at Bari, from September 18 to 20. The medal was bestowed to honour Suen as the founder of the conference and as a leader of influence in cultivating and advancing the field of handwriting recognition by computers. Suen is from the Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering.

On September 24, Catherine Mulligan was featured in one of Quebec's most influential French newspapers, Le Devoir. The article discusses Mulligan's long career working in the area of environmental engineering and mentions the pending launch of Concordia's Water, Energy and Sustainability Institute. Catherine Mulligan is associate dean for the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science, as well as professor and researcher in the Department of Building, Civil and Environmental Engineering.

The Partnership Group for Science and Engineering (PAGSE) is the sponsor of a regular breakfast meeting called "Bacon and Eggheads," in which parliamentarians and representatives of public agencies can catch up with the latest advances in science and engineering. On September 27, Andreas Athienitis became the first Concordian to deliver a lecture at this prestigious event. His presentation was called "Cities in the Sun: The Path Towards Smart Net-zero Energy Solar Buildings and Communities."

Over the past year-and-a-half, Grzegorz Gut, undergraduate student in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, has worked with assistant professor Samar Abdi, to develop a device, called Scribble, that can discern between the pressure of his hand and the stylus on a resistive screen. The project recently won first prize in the undergraduate category at the first ever Regroupement Stratégique en Microsystèmes du Québec (ResMIQ) Innovation Day.

Under the mentorship of Scott Gleason, Space Concordia clinched first place in the Canadian Satellite Design Challenge. The prize? A launch of the winning satellite into space, scheduled for 2013 or 2014. The satellite's mission is to study the South Atlantic Anomaly. The winning team:
Justin Jean-Pierre, Giovanna Franco, Siddhartha Kattoju,  Shawn Stoute, Tiago Leao, Mehdi Sabzalian, Alex Potapov, Ivan Ivanov, Stefanos Dermenakis, Andrei Jones,  Tyson Boer, Chelsea Pomerontz, Gregory Gibson, Michelle Boyce, Alex Teodor Ionita, Robert Jakobuwicz, Matthias Martineau and Nick Sweet.
