Amin Hammad, from the Concordia Institute for Information Systems Engineering, was featured in January's Report on Business in the Globe and Mail. Hammad leads a research team that is finding ways to manage huge volumes of information and make it easier to process. This is of particular relevance to efforts to help efficiently secure the flow of people and goods across Canada's borders.
March Accolades
These are the featured Accolades for the month of March.
Ketra Schmitt talks about water safety in LeDevoir [article in French]. The assistant professor in the Centre for Engineering in Society highlights some of the problems in Canada and Quebec in detecting water contaminants and in having a commons set of standards across different jurisdictions.
Dean Robin Drew will be inducted as a Fellow into the Engineering Institute of Canada (EIC). The honour is in recognition of his exceptional contributions to engineering in Canada. EIC President Jean Zu will present the recipients at the Institute's Annual Awards Banquet at the Centre Sheraton in Montreal on May 28.
Catherine Mulligan from the Department of Building, Civil and Environmental Engineering has been named one of Concordia's Sustainable Champions for her groundbreaking research efforts and her leadership in establishing the Concordia Institute for Water, Energy, and Sustainable Systems. She will be honoured at a gala held on March 5.
Following the success of Space Concordia in the Canadian Satellite Design Challenge, electrical engineering student, Nick Sweet, has been selected among hundreds of applicants for the CalTech Space Challenge, a 5-day student space mission design competition. Sweet will be participating in the event March 25-29 at the California Institute of Technology.
Faculty students shone brightly at the Quebec Engineering Competition, winning 1st place in the Scientific Communication Category and 3rd place in Junior Design. Read more here. Meanwhile, Concordia won Rookie Team of the Year in the Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race. Read more here.
Several Concordia students were big winners at student night of the Montreal Chapter of the American Society for Metals (ASM) on February 20. Maniya Aghasibeig won best poster. Other recognized Concordia students were Ehsan Rezabeig and Mohammad Mahdipoor.
