The ASM-Montreal Student Poster Night, hosted by Concordia on February 11, 2015, is an annual event organized by the Montreal Chapter of the American Society for Metals (ASM) to encourage and reward students in the Greater Montreal area who are conducting research in the field of materials science and engineering. It’s also a great networking opportunity, connecting students with their peers, professors and industry.
This year was a big success, with 93 participants and 36 students presenting posters of their research. Two students from Concordia’s Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering placed high in competitions: Ehsan Rezabeigi finished third in the PhD category and Navid Sharifi collected the Jury’s Favourite award.
The evening’s special guest was Bertrand Jodoin, a professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at University of Ottawa. He gave a presentation called, “Cold Gas Dynamic Spraying: Where Do We Go From Here?” Jodoin works on the development of new coating processes for the production of high performance coatings for the aeronautic sector.
Many Concordians are involved in related research, notably, Christian Moreau, who is the Canada Research Chair in Thermal Spray and Surface Engineering, and Ali Dolatabadi, who is currently the president of the Canadian Society for Mechanical Engineering (CSME). Both professors are also the co-directors of Concordia’s Thermal Spray and Multiphase Flow Laboratories. Applications of this research include the manufacture of special coatings for the metals in aircraft, better protecting them in certain cases; also making them resistant to water build-up and potentially hazardous freezing.
