Seminar: The World at your Geometricks
Dr. Tiberiu Popa (Computer Graphics Lab, ETH Zurich)
Friday, March 1, 2013, 10:00 a.m, EV 11.119
Abstract
Digital geometry processing is a powerful tool used ubiquitously in increasingly many aspects of the digital world from games, movies to engineering, CAD, medicine and telepresence. It is also a relatively new and emerging field that in the last decade has developed a large set of new algorithms and techniques that are increasingly used in mainstream applications becoming more and more established in the digital world.
In this talk I will present some of my work in digital geometry processing with applications in modeling, deformation, novel view synthesis, telepresence and teleconferencing. I will show how pure geometric algorithms can be used to solve complex problems and I hope I will convince you of the relevance of digital geometry processing in todays digital world and hopefully will inspire new students to use and study some of these techniques.
Bio
Dr. Tiberiu Popa is a postdoctoral researcher in the Computer Graphics Lab at ETH Zurich. He completed his Bachelor of Mathematics in 2001 and Master of Mathematics in 2004, both at the University of Waterloo in Canada. In 2010, Tiberiu obtained a PhD from the University of British Columbia in Canada that received the Alain Fournier annual thesis award, and then started at ETH in January 2010. Since 2011 he is coordinating the research efforts of the BeingThere center Zurich, a research collaboration between ETH University of North Carolina and Nanyang University of Singapore on next generation Telepresence systems. Tiberiu’s main research interests are in digital geometry processing, spatial-temporal surface acquisition, free viewpoint video, Telepresence, etc.
