Abstract

The acronym QMS stands for Quality Management System, holds the letter « Q » but the most important letters are the last two « MS ». A company is nothing without proper management. The Quality standards do not refer to the product but to the way a business is managed.

Why is a standard created just after Second World War, adopted in over 160 countries and used by millions of companies around the world so strong after 70 years of existence?

Continuous Improvement (strive for excellence), meet and often exceed customer expectation is the target.

How can a system be so general in terms, fit every size and type of business, not be directive as to affect directly the product or service, but be so helpful?

Let’s slide into some unknown corners and see what makes it so attractive. The speaker is a QMS auditor and will speak about his experiences in different companies.

Biography

Robert has been working in different enterprises for the last 40 plus years. After a modest five year stay in the Canadian Armed Forces as an aircraft engine mechanic, he tested the same engines at Rolls Royce once he was out.

​After studying to become an industrial draftsman, he reoriented his career and started drawing simulators at CAE, did some engineering drawings at SNC and has done the first CAD installation drawings for the A-66 at Pratt & Whitney Canada (P&WC).

On his own, he had P&WC as his largest customer for 10 years. He participated in the many mechanical and instrumentation transformations of test benches for experimental engines. He earned his bachelor’s degree at HEC at the age of 50. It’s after a quality related course in 1996 that he qualified his own drafting business and adopted the good practices learned in his quality class.

When he was offered to put together an AS9100 standard certification for a new aerospace related company in 2007, he made it a priority and a success. He has since put together many other Quality Management Systems (QMS) and is currently putting together an AS9120 QMS for a small distributor. He also travels around Canada and the US to audit company’s QMS for large Certification Bodies (CB).
