François-Marc Gagnon wins prize from the Historical Society of Canada

François-Marc Gagnon, founding director and distinguished research fellow of the Gail and Stephen A. Jarislowsky Institute for Studies in Canadian Art, has won the 2012 Sir John A. Macdonald Prize from the Historical Society of Canada for his book The Codex Canadensis and the Writings of Louis Nicolas.

Published in the 18th-century and dedicated to King Louis XIV of France, the Codex Canadensis is an illustrated manuscript about the flora, fauna and peoples of the New World.

The Sir John A. Macdonald Prize is awarded to the non-fiction work of Canadian history judged to have made the most significant contribution to an understanding of the Canadian past.
