Commonplace Books
Produced by the students of ARTH 356: Studies In Materials & Processes of Art: To Draw
Professor: Dr. Charles Gagnon
These commonplace books were compiled and made by the students as a method to investigate the nature of drawing, both as a material object and an activity. The commonplace book is a Renaissance invention, used to collect, compile, and classify passages, or facts encountered in books, or in nature. The gathering of material could be used for future arguments, speeches, or texts, with indexing easing the retrieval of material.
For the class, the students had only one topic to explore, drawing, from which several categories were created, and indexed. The project was to encourage a direct encounter between the students and various techniques, tools, materials, and concepts pertaining to drawing.
