Carol Wainio Carol Wainio

A significant figure in contemporary Canadian painting, Ottawa-based artist Carol Wainio will be at Concordia for an artist talk on her work and ideas. Wainio's paintings embody a synthesis of visceral and painterly approaches with a specific interest in the narrative power of images that is both erudite and visually enchanting. Her works draw together diverse references to explore the nuances of history, narrative, representation, the environment, and the changing nature of human experience. A large collection of Wainio's paintings is currently featured in a substantial exhibition at the UQAM Gallery in an exhibition entitled The Book which features fifteen of her paintings that reference and re-imagine the imagery in folktales, fairy tales and illustrated books to create a dialogue with the current socio-political context.

Carol Wainio obtained her MFA from Concordia University in 1985. Her paintings have been widely exhibited and collected in Canada and internationally in both public and private galleries. Exhibitions include the National Gallery of Canada, the Art Gallery of Ontario, The Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal, Trépanier Baer, Gallery, Calgary, Galerie Rene Blouin, Montreal, Paul Petro Contemporary Art, Toronto, and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, among others. Wainio has taught at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, Concordia University, the University of Ottawa, and the University of Western Ontario.
