Conversations in Contemporary Art in collaboration with the DHC/ART Foundation for Contemporary Art, Artexte, and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, is proud to present the second annual Miriam Roland lecturer, Sarah Thornton: writer, ethnographer, sociologist of art, and Concordia alumna. Dr. Thornton will be speaking about her forthcoming book, 33 Artists in 3 Acts. Please note the special date, time, and location of this event.

Sarah Thornton is a writer, ethnographer and sociologist of art. Her book, Seven Days in the Art World, is a witty series of non-fiction narratives, which reveal the inner workings of the institutions that contribute to an artist's place in art history. The book is an international hit, available in 16 translations.
Thornton's forthcoming book, 33 Artists in 3 Acts, asks: what is an artist? Is it a radical form of entrepreneurship or a vocational calling like the priesthood? Is it an extension of philosophy or an offshoot of entertainment? 33 Artists in 3 Acts will be published by WW Norton in November 2014.
Thornton has been the chief writer on contemporary art for The Economist and has written for many other newspapers and magazines including Artforum, The Guardian (UK), Sueddeutsche Zeitung (Germany) and The New Yorker. She has contributed to broadcasts by BBC TV and radio, German ZDF television and NPR radio.
A Canadian who went to Britain on a Commonwealth Scholarship, Thornton's PhD was published as Club Cultures: Music, Media and Subcultural Capital. She also co-edited the first edition of The Subcultures Reader (Routledge). Thornton was once a tenured member of faculty at Sussex University and has been a research fellow at Goldsmiths College, University of London. Thornton has a PhD in the Sociology of Culture from Strathclyde University (Glasgow) and a BA in Art History from Concordia University (Montreal).

Sarah Thornton exerce trois professions : écrivaine, ethnographe et sociologue de l'art. Paru en anglais sous le titre de Seven Days in the Art World, son livre Sept jours dans le monde de l'art réunit des récits documentaires pleins d'esprit. L'auteure lève le voile sur les rouages des établissements qui contribuent à définir la place des artistes au sein de l'histoire de l'art. Traduit en seize langues, l'ouvrage a connu un succès international.
Dans 33 Artists in 3 Acts ("trente-trois artistes en trois actes") que lancera en novembre 2014 la maison d'édition WW Norton, Mme Thornton pose les questions suivantes : Qu'est-ce qu'un artiste? Le métier d'artiste relève-t-il d'une forme radicale d'entrepreneuriat ou d'un appel, d'une vocation, à la manière du sacerdoce? Tient-il d'un prolongement de la philosophie ou d'un dérivé du divertissement?
Chroniqueuse principale en matière d'art contemporain à l'hebdomadaire The Economist, Mme Thornton a aussi collaboré à bon nombre de revues et journaux, notamment Artforum, The Guardian (Royaume-Uni), Sueddeutsche Zeitung (Allemagne) et The New Yorker. Elle a également participé à des émissions à la télé et à la radio de la BBC, et, en Allemagne, sur la chaîne de télévision ZDF et sur les ondes de la radio NPR.
Née au Canada, Mme Thornton a poursuivi ses études en Grande-Bretagne après avoir obtenu une bourse du Commonwealth. Sa thèse de doctorat est le sujet d'un ouvrage publié sous le titre Club Cultures: Music, Media and Subcultural Capital ("club cultures : musique, médias et capital sous-culturel"). Coresponsable de la première édition de Subcultures Reader ("le lecteur de sous-cultures") chez Routledge, Mme Thornton a par ailleurs été professeure à l'Université du Sussex et chercheuse-boursière au Goldsmiths College de l'Université de Londres. Titulaire d'un doctorat en sociologie de la culture de l'Université de Strathclyde à Glasgow, Mme Thornton possède aussi un baccalauréat ès arts en histoire de l'art de l'Université Concordia à Montréal.
