Painting and Drawing Artist's Talk Series Presents: ANTHONY BURNHAM
"I'm fascinated by the way we get to know objects through images of them -- sometimes those images have a complicated and ambiguous history" - Anthony Burnham
Montreal-based artist Anthony Burnham practice re-examines the practice of painting through the perspective of other media, notably sculpture and photography. His paintings take as their themes the formal and symbolic components that have played a central role in the history of painting, such as perspective, illusionism and the grid. In Burnham's work, both concept and process are intrinsic to the work and the resulting image/surface has a subtle, imbued tactility that speak to his observations on the relations between different media.
"Burnham's approach to rethinking and remaking is essential.... Sculptural constructions, folds, copies, and photographs give the artist an intimate knowledge of his subject and of their spatial relationships - the final paintings are a reflection of these carefully crafted relationships." -Daniel Baird, Canadian Art Magazine
