Spring Convocation 2015

Convocation is the beginning of a graduating student's transition into the world, and to very good company.

Concordians occupy an important place in contemporary Canadian art: 13 of 50 artists in this year’s Biennale de Montréal were graduates of Fine Arts, while 7 of 25 people long-listed for the prestigious Sobey award studied at Concordia. Fine Arts alumni have also been nominated for and/or won Grammys, Oscars and research prizes, to name just a few, in recent years. This is a fruitful, positive and welcoming time.

Sophie Glowa

BFA, Art Education
Valedictorian

Sophie Glowa is a practicing artist and art educator. She is interested in the potential of building collaborative learning communities. Her work developing an intergenerational collaborative art project was selected as a Best Practice Lecture for the 2015 National Art Education Association (NAEA) National Convention.

Glowa's artistic practice aims to create inclusive images that reflect common experiences. Professionally, she aspires to help people discover new ways of thinking and creating while promoting arts advocacy.

Angèle Dubeau

Honorary doctorate

Violinist Angèle Dubeau is being honoured for her success in making classical music accessible to a wider audience, as well as for her virtuosity as a player.

In the course of her long and distinguished career, Dubeau has won a wide range of competitions, played with international orchestras and performed in more than 40 countries. She also recorded 42 albums and sold more than half a million records, including three certified gold discs.

In 1997, Dubeau founded La Pietà, an all-female string ensemble that quickly gained a reputation for lively, highly skilled performances.

Dubeau’s career has been driven by the desire to reach wider audiences with her music. She hosts concerts and music television programs for CBC/Radio-Canada, as well as the popular Fête de la Musique de Tremblant.
