The first recipient of the Jorisch Family Artist Residency Award is Breanna Shanahan, an MFA student who produces sculptural and two-dimensional work that deals with human body geography, focusing on contrast and tension in materials, processes, and context. She often juxtaposes the hand-made and the machine-made, which are commonly seen in opposition, to “create a space where a diversified production can be given a platform to affect the viewer.” The Jorisch Family Artist Residency provides support for one graduate student annually to experience life and learning in Salzburg, Austria, and complete an artist residency at the Amalie Redlich Tower of the Museum der Moderne in Salzburg.
Shanahan’s work has been exhibited in Montreal, Toronto, Oakville, and Mississauga. Her MFA work will be shown May 18-21 in Maureen II, a group show at the Ancienne École des Beaux-Arts in Montreal. She has participated in an artist residency at the Living Arts centre in Mississauga, and is one of six members of the artist collective 13,450 Sq. Ft. Shanahan has been the recipient of many prestigious awards and scholarships including the 2016 Joseph-Armand Bombardier Canada SSHRC Scholarship, the Hitting the High Notes Fellowship 2015, the Dr. Annie Smith Graduate Scholarship 2015, the Mississauga Arts Council Emerging Artist Award 2015, the Paul Kipps Sculpture Award 2015 and the Doctor Annie Smith Award 2014.
