Candice Hopkins gives a lecture on the complexities of curatorial practice in the contemporary art world

A special lecture is taking place as part of a collaborative initiative between Concordia’s Faculty of Fine Arts and the Musée d'art contemporain (MAC) de Montréal, and in conjunction with the museum’s major renovation and reopening on Sainte-Catherine Street. On March 18, Candice Hopkins, chief curator and executive director of Forge Project (Taghkanic, New York), will present on the evolving challenges and opportunities in contemporary art curation.

This event is one of two major public lectures at the MAC exploring the role of institutions in shaping the future of contemporary art. Hopkins’s talk will delve into the shifting dynamics of the art world and how curatorial practices are adapting to these changes.

This lecture also marks the launch of Concordia's new Graduate Microprogram and Graduate Certificate in Curatorial Studies, which provide advanced academic training in curating contemporary art.

About the speaker

Candice Hopkins, a citizen of the Carcross/Tagish First Nation, is an influential curator and writer whose work explores the intersections of contemporary art, history and Indigeneity. As executive director and chief curator at Forge Project, Hopkins has curated several important exhibitions, including Indian Theater: Native Performance, Art, and Self-Determination Since 1969 and Impossible Music (co-curated with Raven Chacon and Stavia Grimani).

Hopkins has also contributed to high-profile projects such as the inaugural 2019 and the 2022 Toronto Biennial of Art, the Canadian Pavilion at the 58th Venice Biennale and documenta 14 in Athens, Greece and Kassel, Germany.
