Toronto artist 'Chalkmaster' Dave Johnston welcomed the assistance of Art Education students Judith Boily-Valois and Keli Chiu in the development of a chalk mural drawing with 3D definition at the Palais de congrès. The art project was commissioned by Novozymes, who held their 10th annual BIO World Congress in Montreal from June 16 to 19, 2013.

According to Paige Donnelly, communications manager for Novozymes North America, the company was looking for ways to involve and engage the local community in the BIO World Congress and educate them about industrial biotechnology in Quebec.

"We decided to pursue an art mural project as it's a very interactive and entertaining activity that everyone can enjoy," she said. "Of course we were looking for a local partner near the Montreal Convention Center where the event would be held, and Concordia popped up in a search at the top of the list.  The University is centrally located and well recognized for its arts programs."

Chiu said that painting the mural with Dave was a very positive experience.

"He was being a big brother much more than a coach, he told stories and jokes, showed tricks with paint brushes, and he shared the techniques to achieve 3D illusions on painting. Working in such large scale was challenging yet satisfying."

Boily-Valois also enjoyed the day's work.

"Dave shared his passion and told us the secret behind his work. It was a pleasure to learn from him and to hear his stories. The people from Novozyme were great, and it was a pleasure to bring some color and creativity to the world of science. As an art educator, it's important to learn about adapting yourself to new situations."

Check out the amazing progress that Boily-Valois and Chiu made on the mural over the three days they spent working on the project.
