The Gail and Stephen A. Jarislowsky Institute for Studies in Canadian
Arts Director François-Marc Gagnon debuted a new book on April 18,
2011.
Jean Berger, peintre et complice? presents a wealth
of archival material relating to Jean Berger, a New France painter and
notorious figure whose works did not survive but whose legacy paints a
striking image of Montreal during the years 1700-1710.
The book features, among other documents presented with
accompanying notes by Professor Gagnon, the transcripts of the long
trial where Berger was accused of publicly assaulting apothecary Claude
Sainte-Olive.
