Book Launch - Graffiti and Street Art

October 1, 2011
|

Love it or loathe it, graffiti plays a prominent role in the culture and consciousness of cities.

Art History alumna (PhD 09), staff member (she currently works as the Department Coordinator) and Affiliate Professor Anna Waclawek launched her new book, Graffiti and Street Art (2011, Thames & Hudson, World of Art series) in October 2011. Analyzing the various functions of graffiti and street art in the urban environment and their increasingly important role in visual culture, Waclawek examines what many consider to be a leading art movement of the twenty-first century.

Graffiti and Street Art
features a wide range of artists working in different media and styles across multiple countries. It explains the terms and language of street art - from tags and throwies to culture jamming and subvertising - as well as its multiple influences and sub-genres.

Uniquely, Graffiti and Street Art analyses not just the work, but the functions of graffiti and street art and their increasingly important role in urban visual culture. The picture that Waclawek paints is a rich celebration of two of the defining art movements of the twenty-first century.
