Examining the development of art institutions in Canada, Dr. Anne Whitelaw’s new book Spaces and Places for Art: Making Art Institutions in Western Canada, 1912-1990 makes a study of the relationship between art museums in Western Canada and federal cultural institutions.

Tracing the establishment of institutions from 1912 to the 1990s, Dr. Whitelaw analyses the consumption, production, and circulation of art within Canada as, with the help of national arts initiatives such as the funding programs of the Canada Council, the National Museums Corporation, and the Massey Commission, institutions begin building their own collections.

An associate professor of in the Department of Art History, Dr. Whitelaw also holds the position of Vice-provost Planning and Positioning at Concordia University.
