Third Floor Journal - Winter 2025 Call for Papers

December 12, 2024
|

Third Floor is a peer-reviewed journal of graduate student writing on art and art history at Concordia University in Tiohtià:ke/Montreal, Quebec. Third Floor aims to amplify emerging authors and art historians across all disciplines. In addition to conventional scholarly essays, the journal welcomes experimental forms of writing and storytelling including first person perspective, poetry, fragments, and arts production. For the inaugural issue of the relaunched Third Floor journal, our editorial team invites graduate students to respond to the issue’s theme “Night-Lives.” When faced with challenges of institutional erasure, political upheaval, and slashed funding and resources for artists and scholars, "Night-Lives" aims to explore what emerges in the underbelly of austerity and institutional abjection. What collective networks form to combat individualism, and where do the alienated go in search of community connections? Who lives "Night-Lives" and where?

Possible topics include but are not limited to:

● Underground networks, night clubs, rave culture

● Alternative spaces of pedagogy and study, the undercommons

● Performance, cabaret, burlesque

● Queer nightlife, drag shows

● Excess, consumption, and abjection

● Visibility and invisibility

● (Alternative) studio spaces

While Third Floor welcomes submissions from graduate students in any field, all submissions must be from a currently enrolled graduate student. All proposals submitted should be for papers approximately 2500-4000 words in length, excluding notes and bibliography. All proposals will undergo a single-blind review process. Successful submissions will be published on our new website in spring 2025.
