Sylvain Duguay (1975-2017) "He brought a great deal of energy to our School of Cinema"

The Concordia community is mourning the loss of Sylvain Duguay, who passed away February 5, 2017 in an automobile accident at the age of 42.

Sylvain worked in the Mel Hoppenheim School of Cinema at Concordia from 2000 until 2010, and he completed an interdisciplinary PhD in the Humanities (fine arts) at the university as well.

He was charismatic, efficient, caring, resourceful and much loved by colleagues.

“Sylvain was a great pleasure to work with. I knew him as a student and as a departmental assistant, and also as a friend. He had an infectious sense of humour and brought a great deal of energy to the Mel Hoppenheim School of Cinema during his years here. Our deepest sympathies go to his family,” says Catherine Russell, Chair of the Mel Hoppenheim School of Cinema.

As a student from 2007 to 2008, he successfully finished a PhD in the Humanities. He taught a course, Sexual Representation in the Cinema, while completing his doctorate at the Mel Hoppenheim School of Cinema. Sylvain’s thesis supervisor Professor Thomas Waugh, recalls, “I will never forget the pleasure of working with him on his thesis Hybridités: Homosexualités de la scène a l'écran au Canada, which he defended with aplomb in 2008.”

Since his graduation, Sylvain had taught in the Department of Humanities at John Abbott college in Saint-Anne-de-Bellevue. He leaves behind his partner of 19 years, the interdisciplinary artist Victor Pilon.
