Scholarship Opportunity for Animators: Grant Munro Scholarships in Film Animation

The Film Animation program at Concordia University is proud to announce the inaugural year of the Grant Munro Scholarships in Film Animation.

This gift was generously bequeathed to Concordia University by Grant Munro to assist newly admitted full time undergraduate students in Film Animation Program at the Mel Hoppenheim School of Cinema.

Two Scholarships of approximately $8000 each will be awarded to selected incoming full-time ​​ BFA Film Animation applicants.   The Scholarships shall be granted based on a combination of academic merit and an outstanding portfolio demonstrating artistic excellence and a unique cinematic vision.

Preference shall be given to candidates from communities who are, at the time of their admission, underrepresented in higher education.  Indigenous artists, visible & cultural minorities, refugees  or other such underrepresented  communities are strongly encouraged to apply.

Eligible candidates include Canadian citizens, permanent residents and international students.

Grant Munro was an Oscar-nominated Canadian animation legend whose pioneering work at the National Film Board spanned five decades. One of the original members of the NFB’s Animation studio, Grant was an animator, jeweller, sculptor, painter and interdisciplinary artist, and was known for his innovative, highly creative work and his mentorship of generations of animation filmmakers. Mr. Munro was a generous man concerned with social justice. He produced films that were used as public education tools in schools across Canada, and collaborated with the Montreal Children’s Hospital to create educational films for children with learning disabilities. Grant also worked on several films which included strong critiques of violence. Among the many honours bestowed upon him, Grant Munro received an Honorary Doctorate from Concordia University and was made an Officer of the Order of Canada. In 2003 the Museum of Modern Art in New York honoured Munro with a film retrospective of his animation. Grant Munro’s fearlessness in trying and embracing new techniques, as well as his principled passion, serve as a model for the kind of interdisciplinary joy, professionalism, and eye for social responsibility that the Film Animation program aspires to cultivate in its students.
