115 participants from 14 countries: AMI-GIM conference at Concordia a big success
Concordia University recently hosted the 24th International Conference - Association for Music & Imagery (AMI) in June 2017. This is the first time that the AMI Conference has come to Montreal. Held in the Grey Nuns conference rooms and York Auditoriums, the conference brought together 115 participants from 14 countries - more than double of the planned attendees! This year’s conference theme was Celebrating the Journey: Past, Present, and Future which aimed to reflect the roots, the current, as well as future practices in the field. The conference reaffirmed the expansion of Guided Imagery and Music (GIM) with rich perspectives and visions from North and South America, Europe, Asia, and Australia.
The Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music is a music-centered, consciousness-expanding therapy developed by Helen Bonny. Therapists trained in the Bonny Method choose classical music sequences that stimulate journeys of the imagination. Experiencing imagery in this way facilitates clients’ integration of mental, emotional, physical and spiritual aspects of well-being. Last year, Concordia Music Therapy professor Guylaine Vaillancourt became the first Québec Primary Trainer in the Bonny Method of GIM.
Presenters with ties to Concordia included Music Therapy professor Laurel Young, and Concordia Music Therapy alumni Kiki Chang and Martine Létourneau. Under the guidance of Conference Chair and Concordia Music Therapy professor Guylaine Vaillancourt and the wonderful team she assembled, the conference was a big success. Congratulations Guylaine!
