"EAHR - Speaker Series" - Call for Art

October 2, 2013
|

Concordia's Ethnocultural Art History Research workgroup (EAHR) and Galerie VAV Gallery invites you to submit works for its first collaborative exhibition on the theme of "empathy: aesthetic reflections on marginalization."

Empathy |ˈempəTHē|

The exhibition seeks to examine the role of marginalization in everyday life and its influences on artistic practices. We welcome visual art that engages with the multitude of complex issues that the theme engenders around different forms of privilege, marginalization and oppressions. Our goal is to create an exhibition that allows for empathetic viewing of works of art concerning experiences that may or may not be akin to their own. In this way, it is hope that visitors can become more aware of the ways in which empathy goes beyond acceptance and challenges normative assumptions about the lived experiences of others. We want to start a dialogue around visual representations of marginalized experiences and to create a responsive space to those needs.

We strongly encourage artists of all mediums to apply. Please note that the exhibition will be housed in two different sites: the third floor vitrine near the art history department in the EV building and Galerie VAV Gallery in the VA building.

Submissions may include up to 5 art pieces and must include:

  1. A photo and brief description of the work include projected completion date if applicable.
  2. Artist statement 200 words, maximum and must include a relationship between your work and the above-mentioned theme.
  3. Size of work; please note - the dimensions of the vitrine are 6' x 4' x 2', this applies to you if you are not a Concordia undergraduate student.

SUBMISSION DEADLINE:  October 4th, 2013

All submissions can be emailed to Galerie VAV Gallery.

If you have any questions or concerns about this exhibition, please do not hesitate to e-mail Kris or Sarah.
