The Painting and Drawing Artist's Talk Series: FRANCES ADAIR MCKENZIE
Wednesday November 14th at 12:30 in VA 323.
Frances Adair McKenzie is an interdisciplinary artist based in Montreal, whose practice includes installation, animation, sculpture and collaborative ventures. Her work investigates concepts of materiality, staging and form and defers to process as the hands-on manipulation of real material and objects, most recently through glass sculptures and the interface of digital technology. Her practice negotiates the shifting fluidity of high and low cultural precedents put forth by experimental feminist artists and historical culture, building meaning through the process of inquiry and the act of making itself. Animation contributes as experimental gestures
that get built up as laboured and layered fictions, contradicting expectations through their simplicity; animations via breath, disintegration, shadow and moisture.
Frances holds a diploma in New Media from B.C.I.T. and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Concordia University. Her video work has been exhibited most recently in London and Berlin with collaborative performance projects debuting in Iceland and Belgium. She has also exhibited work at Centre Clark in Montréal and the Satosphere of the Société des Arts Technologiques (SAT), with an upcoming exhibition at Parisian Laundry. Several of her animations have been commissioned by the National Film Board of Canada and she is currently in production on her first stop-motion virtual reality project. In 2016, she produced the visuals and animations for an augmented reality artist book, Glossed Over & Tucked Up, which was published by Anteism Press.
