For the first time ever, students from Concordia University’s John Molson School of Business (JMSB) competed in the McDonough Hilltop Business Strategy Challenge (MHBSC). The competition, hosted Georgetown University in Washington, DC took place from January 30 to February 1.

The event, which focused on not-for-profit business and included a 36-hour preparation period, attracted twenty top-level teams from all over the world. In the preliminary round, teams were given 10 uninterrupted minutes to present their recommendations and then faced 10 minutes of questions. Teams were given another five minutes to present their closing remarks.

This year’s case involved the not-for-profit Goodwill of Greater Washington (GGW), whose mission is to “help people in need achieve their full potential through the power of learning and work”. Competitors were faced with marketing and donor-related issues to resolve, as well as issues dealing with supply chain.

Representing Concordia, were undergraduate students Alexandra Duffy, Alexander Harris, Alison Revine, and Gabriel Velasquez. They received excellent feedback from the judges for their handling of some very complex issues in a comprehensive and professional manner.

The final standings were:

  1. Georgetown University
  2. Queensland University of Technology (QUT)
  3. Northeastern University
  4. American University

The John Molson Competition Committee (JMCC) would like to thank lead coach Montse Salinas, who with the help of Kevin Gardner Gregory, did an outstanding job preparing the team for a very different style of competition.

The John Molson Competition Committee would like to thank Head Coach and Advisor to the Competition Program, Mark Haber for his commitment and contribution to seeing this team conquer a new challenge.

The Committee would also like to thank its exclusive sponsor Pfizer Canada for their support of the competition program.
