A team of undergraduate students from Concordia’s John Molson School of Business (JMSB) has won the 2013 Brock University Accounting Conference, held between November 29 and December 1. The University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) and the University of Waterloo took second and third, respectively.

The JMSB team of Joe Bartlett, Rayees Haider, Victoria Lalonde and Mike Leblanc were coached by Gail Fayerman, Francis-Carl Belanger, Patrick Gagnon, Stuart Knecht and Sasha Lalonde. A team from Concordia has won the competition three of the four times the school has fielded a team.

The 2013 edition of the competition marked the five-year anniversary of the event and was themed "Merging of the Minds.” Seven universities sent nine teams to the competition, which were placed into three divisions, with the winners of each moving on to the final round to make their presentation in front of all the competitors.

The business case required participants to analyze the proposed acquisition of a large brake pad manufacturing business. They were asked to provide recommendations on the financial implications, negotiating strategy and integration of the two businesses. In keeping with the competition’s theme, the businesses were located in different parts of the world, had different priorities and traded in different currencies.

“Our winning team presenting a very balanced case which not only provided a sound quantitative analysis of the proposed acquisition, but also took the qualitative and cultural issues into account,” says Gagnon. “JMSB fielded a second team consisting of Leah Beaufils, Melissa Marginson, Brinda Nandy and Fahim Sheikh. They were in the same division as the UOIT that finished in second and thus didn’t make it to the final round despite representing JMSB well.”

The John Molson Case Competition Committee (JMCC) would like to thank all of the coaches for their outstanding work and dedication.

The JMCC also thanks Mark Haber for his boundless commitment.

The Committee would like to extend its deepest gratitude to Exclusive Title Partner PepsiCo Foods Canada, Premier Partners Pfizer Canada, Maxi and Power Corporation of Canada, Database Sponsor PODIO, and Associate Partner Canderel for their support and encouragement of the case competition program for their support and encouragement of the case competition program.
