“The HEC Montréal Défi RSE/CSR Challenge is a premier international case competition,” says Tim Field, a senior lecturer at the John Molson School of Business and faculty advisor for the MBA Case Competition Program.

The bilingual event, which took place from February 14 to 16, had teams of MBA students from across the globe analyzing business cases and presenting solutions to a range of issues in the areas problems and challenges in sustainability, corporate social responsibility (CSR) and environment.

Two of the 22 teams were from Concordia. One took home the top prize, the other finished second.

“I am incredibly proud of our teams and appreciate greatly the dedication and commitment of our coaches and MBA Case Competition Committee members,” says Field.

The winning team included John Molson MBA students Jonathan Faerman, Udhay Kapoor, Amanda Rushton and Winnie Hu. They were coached by Field and alumnus Matthew Beck.

“It was a great experiential learning opportunity,” says Rushton. “We got to hone our communication and storytelling skills and learned a lot about the issues companies face today when trying to create ethical, sustainable business solutions.”

The challenges that participants were presented with included those faced by multi-nationals operating in a conflict zone, the values of partnerships in the non-profit sector and the financial autonomy of a UNESCO-designated biosphere reserve.

The judges’ panel consisted of professionals from the public and private sectors who specialize in CSR and sustainability, including representatives from the United Nations, Desjardins Group, Millani, Vidéotron, Loto-Québec and the Government of Quebec.
