The Bergdahl Exchange

In June 2009 U.S. Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl disappeared from a military base and was held captive by the Taliban-aligned Haqqani network in Afghanistan. In May 2014, Bergdahl was released by Afghani officials in exchange for five Taliban members who were being held in Guantanamo Bay. Now the U.S. is mired in political controversy surrounding the exchange. Julian Schofield, associate professor in the Department of Political Science, can share his insight into the politics behind the release.
