  • Soccer, race & hooliganism
Racism in soccer went viral when a video surfaced of Brazilian defender, Dani Alves, eating a banana that was thrown at him by a fan while playing for the Spanish league in Barcelona. Racism has become such an issue in the sport that FIFA created a Task Force Against Racism and Discrimination. But it’s not just rampant racism that plagues soccer – the “beautiful game” also has a long history of fan hooliganism. Amy Swiffen and Angela Ford-Rosenthal, professors in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, can both answer questions regarding race, crowd behaviour and deviance.

  • Sports Psychology

If players want to score in a match, should they refrain from scoring the night before? Mexico’s coach, Miguel Herrera, expects abstinence from his players while they compete in Brazil. But do these sorts of rules really impact a player’s performance? Theresa Bianco is a sports psychologist who can share her expertise on in-competition focus, the coach’s role in keeping athletes focused and the impact of media hype on performance.
