The Concordia Stingers are pleased to announce fourth-year offensive lineman Kristian Matte has signed a free agent contract with the NFL’s Houston Texans.

Matte, a native of St. Hubert, Que., signed immediately following the completion of the NFL draft held Thursday through Saturday in New York City.

The versatile Matte played tackle for the Stingers but has the skills to play guard or centre as well.

In 2009, he was a Quebec University Football League all-star and a Canadian Interuniversity Sport second team all-Canadian.

“Kristian is one of the best athletes I’ve ever seen on our offensive line in my 18 years at Concordia University,” says Concordia head coach Gerry McGrath.

Matte joins a long list of Stingers who have enjoyed the attention of NFL teams, including cornerback Mark Montreuil who was drafted in the seventh round by the San Diego in 1995. He went on to play three years.

Other free agent signing include: WR Denis Montana, Houston Oilers, 1996; WR Sylvain Girard, Cleveland Browns, 1999; and punter Burke Dales, Pittsburgh Steeler, 2002.

As well linebacker Mickey Donovan had a tryout with the Detroit Lions in 2004.

Matte, along with teammates LB Cory Greenwood and SB Cory Watson, are expected to be top picks at the CFL draft on May 2.
