October is Volunteer Awareness Month at Concordia and students are encouraged to give back to worthy causes.

Volunteering, unpaid work that’s done out of personal choice, involves giving time to benefit an individual, non-profit organization or community. Across Canada, an estimated 12.5 million people volunteer and give 2.1 billion hours in collective time each year.

To prompt more students to share their talents with organizations that matter, Concordia will host a Volunteer and Leadership Fair on October 7, from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m., at the Atrium of the J. W. McConnell Library Building (1400 De Maisonneuve Blvd. W.).

The fair is being organized by LIVE, i.e. Leadership, Initiative, and Volunteer Engagement, a centre overseen by Counseling and Development.

Students are also invited to a LIVE Centre presentation on how volunteering can improve career prospects, hone skills and impact communities.

The session unfolds at 2070 Mackay on October 4, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., at the Sir George Williams campus. The workshop will be repeated at the Loyola campus on October 21, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., in Room 103 of the Administration Building (7141 Sherbrooke St. W.).

What’s more, the Quebec Public Interest Research Group (QPIRG) will host a workshop titled “Activism 101 for Students” on October 12.

“I hope every student will participate in the LIVE Centre’s activities,” says Howard Magonet, director of Counseling and Development at Concordia and responsible for the LIVE Centre. “It will help others as well as expand their own horizons and help them develop skills they can use in their future careers.”
