Concordia University will be home to the Secretariat of the International Political Science Association (IPSA) for another five years.

The agreement was officially renewed on October 5.

The signing ceremony was attended by Concordia President Judith Woodsworth, Louise Dandurand, Concordia’s VP, Research and Graduate Studies, Leonardo Molino, President of IPSA and Guy Lachapelle, IPSA’s Secretary General and a professor in Concordia’s Political Science Department.

IPSA is an international scholarly association founded in 1949 under the auspices of UNESCO. Its main objective is to promote the advancement of political science globally by facilitating the collaboration of scholars in different parts of the world. It has consultative status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations and with UNESCO.

IPSA has more than 1,500 individual members from over 80 countries, 52 national and regional associations as well as 107 institutional members that represent thousands of political scientists around the world.

Lachapelle became Secretary General of the association 2000. Since the Secretariat traditionally followed the Secretary General to his country of residence, it was transferred from Dublin, Ireland, to Montreal in January 2001.

In October 2005, the IPSA Executive Committee decided to establish its Secretariat on a more permanent basis in Montréal with the support of Concordia University and Montréal International. Establishing the Secretariat in Montreal has contributed a great deal to the development of the association as it provided the institutional stability necessary for the diversification and increase of IPSA’s activities.

The next major event of the association is a joint conference held in collaboration with the European Consortium for Political Research (ECPR), which will take place in Sao Paulo, Brazil, from February 16 through 19, 2011. The next World Congress of Political Science will take place in Madrid, Spain, in July 2012.
