Public discussion on public space

How do we keep Montreal affordable, accessible and liveable?

Norman Nawrocki, part-time faculty member in Concordia's School of Community and Public Affairs, will be facilitating a discussion on the implications of development plans for the Quartier des Spectacles.

Nawrocki has his own history of community organizing, most recently with efforts to save Parc Oxygène, in the Milton-Parc district.

A variety of guests will address the conflicting needs of those who live and work in the neighbourhood vs. the impact of development. Panelists will consider how to keep Montreal affordable, accessible and liveable.

The discussion will take place Wednesday, November 10, at 6:30 p.m. at Concordia's School of Community and Public Affairs, Room CI-104, 2149 Mackay.

On hand to discuss the issues will be panelists:

  • John Bradley, a community organizer at the Pointe Saint-Charles Community Clinic who is active in non-profit housing development.
  • Anita Schoepp and Stéphanie Lareau of Stella, a Montreal community group providing support and info to sex-workers.
  • Velma Candyass, a teacher, choreographer and performer currently active in the movement to save the Lower Main of Boulevard St Laurent, including Cafe Cleopatra.

The discussion is held in collaboration with the Rad School, a group of Montreal community organizers and activists who have presented public events about diverse social justice issues for the last two years.
