The remains of Saint Marguerite d’Youville have begun the passage from her Mother House in Montreal to their final resting place at her birthplace in Varennes, Que.

D’Youville is expected to reach the Basilique Sainte-Anne-de-Varennes on the evening of December 9 after two stops in Montreal: at the Maison de Mère d’Youville, site of the general hospital where she worked and died in the 18th century, and a mass at Notre-Dame Basilica to mark the occasion.

Founder of the Grey Nuns, a charitable association run by women that provided medical attention and help to the poor, d’Youville has seen a number of resting places, but this is expected to be the last relocation.

The 135 Grey Nuns still living at the Mother House expect to move in a few years. Concordia acquired the Mother House in 2007 and currently occupies one of four wings. The occupation of the remaining wings will follow the nuns’ departure.
