For the last decade, MBA students from Concordia’s John Molson School of Business have invited Dartmouth College’s Tuck School of Business students from New Hampshire to Montreal for a weekend to raise funds for worthy causes.

The event features friendly hockey and soccer competitions, as well as social activities. Participants raise awareness and publicize the mission of a local group.

This year’s annual Concordia-Tuck Charity Sports Tournament will raise money for Montreal’s Cedars Cancer Institute, a local hospital-based charity whose mission is to provide comprehensive cancer care and funding to patients and health care professionals.

In previous years, the Concordia-Tuck Charity Sports Tournament has raised funds for the Segal Cancer Centre, the Multiple Sclerosis Society, Sun Youth, Hockey for the Homeless, and other local charities. Since 2001, this grassroots student initiative has raised approximately $30,000.

The 2011 edition will be held on Saturday, January 15 at the Ed Meagher Arena and the Concordia Stinger Dome (7200 Sherbrooke St. W). Over 200 students from Tuck will participate with 50 MBA students, Concordia alumni and supporters that weekend. Representatives from both institutions will go head-to-head with a soccer game from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. The match will be followed by three hockey games (Men’s A, Men’s B, and Women) from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

MBA student and Tournament organizer, Kevin Dobie, says this year’s objective is to beat previous donations and aim for $3,000. Supporters are encouraged to come out and cheer the teams, and to donate online to the cause.

“I am very happy to carry on this tradition into its 11th year,” says Dobie. “Donations make can be made online at the Cedars website. Please make sure to mention the Concordia-Tuck Charity Sports Tournament with your donation.”

A short opening ceremony and presentation of funds raised to a representative from the Institute is scheduled in the arena just before the first hockey game at 4:45 pm.
