Construction begins on escalator project
Regular users of the Concordia Henry F. Hall Building on the Sir George Williams campus will have noticed the move of Tim Horton’s from the east side of the lobby to the area in front of H-110, and the move of the posted exam schedule. This is in preparation for the replacement of the more-than-40-year-old escalators with state-of-the-art technology.
The project, paid for by the Quebec Infrastructure Program, is expected to continue until the spring of 2013 in four phases. This first phase, which encompasses the east side of the lobby and floors nine through 12, is to end in July. The west side of the lobby is part of a later phase. The decision to perform work in the lobby over two phases was made to minimize the disruption to building occupants.
In the next two weeks, temporary walls will be built around all construction sites to ensure the safety of passers-by and to contain sound and dust produced by the construction. Most Concordians will access the upper floors via the stairwells. Passenger elevator access will be limited to those with mobility constraints, and the freight elevator will be tightly scheduled by Distribution Services.
All comments about the construction should be directed to the Service Centre at 514-848-2424, ext. 2400.
