Workshops for student success

Counselling and Development is offering sessions to help first-year, returning and graduate students achieve their academic goals

This semester, Counselling and Development at Concordia is offering several useful workshops for students.

Learn how to develop effective study habits, manage a budget or prioritize obligations.

Introduction to University Writing will offer study preparation techniques to students unfamiliar with the demands of academic writing. The sessions will provide basic strategies for planning, organizing and developing ideas, as well methods to avoid academic plagiarism.

  • Tuesday, January 25 at 11:45 a.m.

Budgeting 101 will teach participants how to build a budget, manage bank accounts, handle credit cards and control debt.

For both new and returning students, the Student Experience Seminar Series will provide an array of workshops to help students choose career paths and better integrate into the Concordia community.

Pre-Med @ Concordia
will help students develop an academic and extracurricular profile to improve their chances of getting into medical school or a graduate program in a related field.

Gaining Exposure for Fine Arts Students (and Other Creative Types) will provide strategies on how to showcase talent, promote artistic work and network within the Montreal arts community.

  • Wednesday, February 9 at 11 a.m.

Improve study habits, life skills and bolster personal success with a series of lectures dedicated to learning, writing, problem-solving and personal relationships.

How to Manage Your Time and Deal with Procrastination will be a two-part series that can enable participants to define and deal with personal styles of procrastination and develop strategies to effectively manage their time.  

  • Tuesday, January 25 and Tuesday, February 1 at 10 a.m. (Participants must attend both sessions.) Room H-440, Henry F. Hall Building (1455 De Maisonneuve Blvd. W).

How to Communicate in Relationships will emphasize that communication is the cornerstone of a long-term relationship. Learn how to avoid common relationship pitfalls, such as not arguing constructively or not clearly sharing expectations, so that inevitable conflicts may be negotiated in a healthy manner.

Ten Simple Truths to an Improved Life will give participants 10 simple guidelines to living that have the ability to boost one’s quality of life and overall sense of happiness.

What happens after graduation?

A final series will address this question with workshops dedicated to job-hunting and career-building. What’s more, the Graduate Experience Series will provide guidance on how to succeed as a master’s or PhD student.

Interview 101: The Art of Communicating Your Skills to an Employer is an interactive workshop on how to prepare for a job interview.

Discover how to answer difficult questions and practise interview questions through role-playing exercises.

A Portfolio for Graduate School will help students prepare portfolios (electronic and paper) for graduate school applications. The first session will make recommendations on appropriate documents, content and layout for application portfolios, while the second session will focus on the all-important personal statement.

Writing Your Graduate Thesis will clarify what Concordia graduate students are expected to include in their graduate theses and provide effective strategies for doing so.
