by Gregory Ning, President of the Institute of Industrial Engineers, Concordia Chapter

Every year, students from across Canada gather to listen to industry leaders and professionals expose various issues and challenges related to industrial engineering. Two years ago, Université du Québec à Trois Rivières hosted the conference, last year, Windsor University and this year École Polytechnique brought the conference back to Montreal.

This year's theme was "Industrial Engineering, an opportunity for Healthcare and Services." Industrial Engineering is a dynamic field which is undergoing many changes within its own trade. Learning about the challenges in other fields than traditional IE paths was both refreshing and stimulating.

Over the course of the  3 day event, IE students were inspired and wooed by interesting presentations and discourses from Senior Consultants, Directors, Vice-Presidents & CEOs from Bombardier, Rockwell, Trellisys, Deloitte, Pratt & Whitney, Alstom, Air Canada, Hydro-Québec, SNC Lavallin, and L'Oréal to name a few.

Easy as 1234…1 silver, 2 golds: 3 medals, 4 competitions
Concordia's delegation participated in all 4 academic competitions - and victorious we were! Our delegation proudly returned home with 3 medals: one 2nd place and two 1st places:

Theoretical - 2nd place
Ali Khatchab, Jean-Francois Colin, Wissam Nahkle, Wajeeh Jamjoon

This competition measures the level of theoretical expertise acquired by the participants. Each university must form a team of four students in order to test their academic knowledge during a 2h30 exam.

Simulation - 1st place
Liat Artzy, Jamal Khayyat, Alfred Mannesseh

New this year, the simulation competition case study was given in mid December. Students had 1 month to develop a model respecting all constraints given in the 11 page problem statement. Before the presentations, Rockwell officials gave additional information and new constraints to the competing teams who had 3 hours to reflect the changes in their model.

Technical Paper - 1st place
Jonathan Rodriguez - Improving the Performance in a Radiology Department of a Community Hospital in Quebec
The purpose of the competition is to encourage undergraduate students to write and present outstanding technical papers. Jonathan Rodriguez will be invited to participate to the Undergraduate Technical Paper Competition International Finals at the IIE Annual Conference and Expo.

Another reason for Concordia to celebrate

After a tight vote with chapter leaders from all 10 Universities, Concordia was voted the 2013 host for IIE’s National Conference. We are counting on your help and support to make it the best Conference yet!
